Many factors can influence the condition of jewellery. Therefore you should make sure that your jewellery is properly cleaned, repaired and stored. Take care to avoid extreme humidity or heat as this may cause tarnishing. This will keep them looking their best.
Please follow these steps to ensure your beautiful jewellery lasts a lifetime.
Silver Jewellery will naturally tarnish over time. Always protect your jewellery from knocks, scratches, chemicals, sunlight and heat/cold to minimise these effects.
We recommend removing jewellery when you shower or bathe and particularly when on the beach, in the sea and in chlorinated water.
Avoid spraying perfume or applying creams directly onto your jewellery.
Keep away from extreme temperatures, humidity and sunlight, and avoid wearing your jewellery when using bleach.
To protect your jewellery, pieces should be individually placed in a pouch or within a soft lined box to stop them being scratched or tangled. Ideally store your jewellery in a dark, cool and dry place, and try to keep pieces apart, so that they don’t rub together or tangle up.
Using a soft, lint free cloth is an effective way to keep silver looking shiny and lustrous. A silver cleaner can also be used to clean sterling silver pieces. Ideally, store silver pieces in an airtight bag to help reduce tarnishing. Do not use tissue paper or paper towels to clean metal as they can cause scratching.
A hallmark is an official mark struck on items made of precious metals. This guarantees the purity/fineness of the metal. Hallmarks are a legal requirement on products of a certain weight – depending on the metal being marked.
The Reason for Hallmarks
Gold and silver are expensive in their pure forms and are too soft to be used for jewellery, so they are mixed with other metals known as alloys, to make them affordable and stronger. Platinum’s density and weight means when combined with other metals it makes it easier to craft. Palladium is rarely used in its purest form, with alloys added it achieves the desired strength and durability.
It can be tricky to see the physical difference between metals such as white gold, platinum and palladium, as they can be very similar in colour, but do vary dramatically in price.
The only reliable guarantee, to ensure the metal purity/fineness has been reached is for the product to be sent to an Assay Office, where it will be tested before being struck with the relevant hallmark.
How to Recognise Hallmarks – what to look out for
A hallmark consists of three parts, which was made compulsory from 1st January 1999:
The Sponsor’s mark
The Standard mark
The Assay Mark
The SPONSOR’S mark (maker’s mark): This symbol indicates the individual or firm, accountable for sending the item to assay. Anyone can do this, from manufacturers, retailers to hobbyists. The sponsor must register this mark and pay a fee at any of the four offices.
After ten years, the registration must be renewed.
Typical sponsor marks seen:
A change in the Hallmark Act, now allows jewellery to be marked with its company logo or brand name.
The STANDARD mark will indicate the fineness of the metal in parts per thousand, this will tell you the percentage of pure gold, silver, platinum or palladium used in the article. The shape of the shield around the number will tell you what metal it is:
Silver = Oval
Gold = Oblong with cut corners
Platinum = Five sided ‘house shape’
Palladium = 3 adjoining circles (after 2010)
The ASSAY or ‘town’ mark. There are only four Assay Offices in the United Kingdom, and each one holds their own hallmark symbol, telling the consumer where the article has been assayed (tested).
Articles Exempt for Hallmarking
Items of minimum fineness, weighing less than the following will not carry a hallmark:
Gold weighing less than 1 gram
Silver, weighing less than 7.78 grams
Platinum weighing less than 0.5 gram
Palladium weighing less than 1 gram
OPTIONAL or VOLUNTARY marks – It is up to the sponsor to request these.
Date letter: This tells you the year in which the item was tested and hallmarked. Only 25 letters of the alphabet are used. A date letter changes in January and runs in alphabetical order. Once all letters have been used, the font will be changed. All four Assay offices use the same font and letter.
Traditional Pictorial Marks: No longer compulsory – a lion head was used on sterling silver and the figure of a woman for Britannia Silver. A crown was used for gold articles.
Commemorative Marks: These are introduced to commemorate significant events, such as:
A millennium mark (available 1999/2000)
A Golden Jubilee mark in 2002
A Diamond Jubilee mark in 2012
International Convention on Hallmarking
International convention mark is not limited to Britain. The convention mark will be recognised by all members within the International convention.
This will mean that articles bearing a convention mark from other countries are legally recognised in the UK, so will not have to be re-hallmarked again here in the UK.
The convention hallmark shows a pair of scales with the fineness of the metal used; this will be stamped in the middle.

Ordering process and contract formation
By completing and submitting an electronic order, you are making an offer to purchase goods which, if accepted by us, will result in a binding contract.
Certain steps must be followed for a binding contract to be formed between us, which are described below. After you have placed your order:
1.0 we will send you, as soon as possible, an email to acknowledge your order. It will confirm which goods you have ordered. This email is not an order acceptance from us and at this stage no contract is formed between us;
2.0 when we despatch your goods from the warehouse, we will send you a confirmation email ("Despatch Email"). This email constitutes a formal acceptance of your order by us. This also means that a binding contract between us is formed and you and we are obliged to fulfil our obligations under that binding contract.
Important note regarding Personalised Items: The above order process does not apply in relation to your orders for Personalised Items. We will acknowledge your order as described in step 1.0 above, however the following order process shall apply:
Payment will be processed and taken when the order is placed with us. This is not an order confirmation or order acceptance from us.
Your order will go into production shortly after the order is placed and payment is processed.
Once your order is ready for dispatch from our warehouse, we will send you a despatch confirmation email. This email constitutes a formal acceptance of your order by us. This also means that a contract between us is agreed and we are obliged to fulfil our obligations under this contract.
Please note that orders (whether for Personalised Items or other items) will only be despatched once we have authorisation from your payment card issuer. We will aim to inform you as soon as possible if there is an issue with the payment authorisation process or with any validation checks for your order. We will not accept your order if payment is not authorised. Where there are issues with the authorisation process or validation checks, your delivery may be delayed as a result.
Pricing and availability
Whilst we try and ensure that all details, descriptions and prices which appear on this website are accurate, errors may occur. If we discover an error in the price of any goods which you have ordered we will inform you of this as soon as possible and give you the option of reconfirming your order at the correct price or cancelling it. If we are unable to contact you we will treat the order as cancelled. If you cancel and you have already paid for the goods, you will receive a full refund. All prices are inclusive of VAT. Delivery costs will be charged in addition; such additional charges are clearly displayed where applicable and included in the ‘Total Cost’.
Under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations, you have up to 7 working days after you have received your delivery to cancel your order (other than in respect of jewellery made to your specification or earrings). To cancel your order you may email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will reply with instructions on returning your goods. Metamorphic Charm does not cover the postage cost of returning goods except in the case where the wrong product is supplied or in case of faulty/damaged goods being supplied. Further details of your rights under Distance Selling Regulations are available from your local Trading Standards Department or Citizens Advice Bureau.
Jewellery images and descriptions
Metamorphic Charm reserves the right to make slight amendments to products on the website including differences in colour, shade and size. Once in receipt of goods the customer can return if not satisfied with the variations from website to actual article. Metamorphic Charm. The Customer’s statutory rights will not be affected.
Choking Hazard for Children and Infants
Please note that Metamorphic Charm jewellery is handmade and is therefore delicate and easily broken if used improperly. Metamorphic Charm jewellery is made up of small parts that constitute a choking hazard for children or babies. Under no circumstances should children or babies be allowed to play or have contact with jewellery. Any jewellery that is sold in a child’s size should be used under adult supervision at all times. Metamorphic Charm accepts no responsibility for any injury related to use of Metamorphic Charm jewellery products.

Changes to Website
Metamorphic Charm reserves the right at any time and without notice to amend, remove or vary any page of this website.
At Metamorphic Charm, each piece of jewellery is lovingly handmade in the UK. Many of the pieces available for purchase from our website are made specially to order, therefore we ask that you please be aware of our delivery times. For all of our jewellery, please allow a possible 2-3 weeks from the date that you place your order, until your jewellery is dispatched for delivery. We use Royal Mail Special Delivery, a secure delivery service which requires a signature upon receipt.
Late and Lost Deliveries
If your delivery has been delayed, then please contact us and we will provide you with the tracking number to enable you to locate it with Royal Mail. We cannot refund or replace lost items until 20 working days after the date of despatch (30 days for international items) - this is when the Royal Mail classes items as being lost.
International delivery - When items are sent to another country, your parcel is often handled by more than one postal service. When we send a parcel abroad, the actual delivery of the item will be the responsibility of the postal service in the country the items are going to. Delays can often be caused by customs checks, which can sometimes take up to 1-2 weeks.
Items not received but tracked as being delivered - This frequently happens when items are delivered to places of work. In some cases, your item might have been delivered to a post room or colleague within your company and someone else will have signed for it. You can check the signature of the person that has signed for the parcel, by entering your tracking number on the Royal Mail website. Please note that we do not refund or replace items that are tracked as being delivered. For this reason, we always recommend that you get items delivered to your home address.
Your order will be dispatched in an unbranded external envelope / box. Jewellery is packaged in a Metamorphic Charm jewellery box, which is packaged in a protective external box. All gift vouchers will be sent in a rigid envelope to help prevent damage whilst in transit.
Unfortunately we don’t exchange products. However, you can return an unwanted item to us for a full refund and place a new order for an alternative item. Please see our returns policy for further details.
If for any reason you are not completely satisfied with your online purchase and would like to return the item for a refund, please contact us within 14 days of receipt of your purchase.
Please note that earrings are excluded from the refund policy due to hygiene reasons. We are unable to refund any earrings purchased at Metamorphic Charm. Also exempt from any refund are Bespoke commissions, made to order items or jewellery altered to a customer request.
In the rare event that goods are delivered faulty or damaged please contact our customer services department by email so we can arrange a replacement or a refund. If the package you receive is damaged or open please do not accept the delivery and contact customer services immediately to arrange a replacement. Should this occur, we will cover additional delivery costs and re-arrange delivery of a new replacement item.
Faulty items will only be accepted for return if the goods have been delivered to the customer damaged, or if a manufacturing fault occurs within the 6 months after delivery. All items that are returned as faulty will be assessed by Metamorphic Charm, and any item displaying damage that is deemed to be a direct result of fair wear or accidental damage will not be accepted as faulty. We offer a full repairs service for such items. There will be a small charge for this service, to cover the cost of the repair along with any shipping costs incurred.
To return an item to us, please follow the below steps:

You have 14 days from receipt of your order to contact us to arrange a return of your purchase. The item must then be returned to us within 14 days from that point.
Securely package your item/s in it’s original box.
On the outside of the packaging, please make sure to clearly write your Return Number and Address provided.
Return the item to us via a secure, trackable service. If you are in the UK, we recommend Royal Mail Special Delivery.
Metamorphic Charm does not accept any responsibility for return postage costs, nor for any items lost, stolen or damaged in transit. These responsibilities are those of the customer.
If you wish to return a product you have purchased from Metamorphic Charm, you may do so providing the item is unused and in a resaleable condition within 14 days of delivery. Your refund will be credited to the original payment card used. If the product returned is not in a fully saleable condition, we reserve the right to refuse a refund. Postage costs cannot be refunded. Please note we cannot accept any returns or offer refunds on any earrings unless there is a manufacturing fault with the product, due to hygiene reasons.
We do not store financial information like credit or debit card numbers on this site. All transactions are handled by a secure online independent payment service provider. We accept payment online by Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Electron or Solo via the secure payment provider, PayPal.
Prohibitions & Misuse
You must not misuse this website.
